University of Auckland, University Hall
The new 442 bed on-campus student accommodation project is a comprehensive student village environment designed as an integrated component of the Auckland University campus. The large campus-edge site provided a unique opportunity for the needs of contemporary student life to be reconsidered.
The design centres on the nature and needs of the end-user. The environment is in every sense a “home for learning” and responds to the key objectives of being well planned, comfortable, secure, technically able and environmentally aware. It generates a sense of character and belonging and above all, the complex provides a venue which promotes academic and personal success.
Key design features include integration with the emerging University Campus Master Plan, provides a legible address, strong building and open space identity and seamless integration with the site’s challenging landscaping context.
The building is designed in a strictly modular format which allowed all bedrooms to be completely prefabricated off site. This provided economic and overall construction programme benefits while also delivering a very high level of interior factory finish.
