Since completing the Christchurch Blueprint, Warren and Mahoney was commissioned to undertake a detailed Masterplan and briefing in 2014, and was duly appointed as the lead architects for the project.  The Metro Sports Facility is one of the 17 Anchor Projects identified in the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan.  

The Metro Sports Facility will be a world class venue and centre of excellence, accessible to people of all ages, abilities and skills. The facility, which has a floor area of over 30,000m² will include an indoor aquatic hall with a 79 metre, 10-lane competition pool and seating for over 1,000 spectators, a leisure area including hot pools and hydroslides, nine indoor courts for sports such as netball and basketball, and retractable seating for 2,500 spectators.  

There will also be a dedicated base for High Performance Sport New Zealand, and spaces for fitness, wellness and other activities.

The Metro Sports Facility will cater for the day-to-day needs of the recreational, educational and high-performance sporting communities, as well as providing the capability to host national and international events. 

The facility will feature:

  • 10-lane, 50m swimming pool and a separate diving pool, with 1000 spectator seats
  • Largest leisure pool in the country
  • Five hydro slides

  • Birthday party room
  • Warm water pool/spa/sauna/steam room
  • Multipurpose indoor courts with capacity for nine netball courts
  • 2500 retractable seats in the show court

  • High performance sports centre
  • Sports House - shared administration area for regional sport
  • VIP and media areas
  • Café
  • Childcare facility
