This positron emission tomography (PET) facility is the first purpose built facility in the South Island. The building is a first floor extension to the existing radiology department and contains a PET/CT suite, five uptake rooms and a hotlab, along with associated administration facilities. Extensive consultation with nuclear physists to achieve a robust flow has resulted in an outcome that is now regarded as a benchmark for similar facilities.

Due to extensive damage following the Christchurch earthquakes, the ground floor space required extensive remediation. The challenge was to maintain a fully operational hospital while extensive construction works were undertaken.

The newly completed facility now offers a MRI suite, three X-ray rooms, four ultrasound suites, a screening room, associated change facilities, three Radiologist spaces and associated administration and staff facilities.
