Arthur's Point Hotel
The hotel is designed in cruciform (cross-shaped) and consists of a boutique 170-room hotel and associated communal spaces, along with 102 serviced apartments and a total GFA of 31 000m2.
The facilities include a conference centre, a health spa complex, complete with a swimming pool, sauna, spa rooms and jacuzzi deck, and a specialty restaurant with a large outdoor dining area that overlooks the Shotover River Valley.
The serviced apartments are positioned to maximise views along the Shotover Valley and feature a restrained palette of natural materials. The serviced apartments are single loaded and designed to soften the project in the landscape, particularly when seen from key vantage points elsewhere in the Valley.
In contrast, the hotel is a bold form which floats delicately above the site - its façade reflecting the surrounding landscape to almost render the architecture invisible.
The identity of the project is strongly expressed when approached along Arthur's Point Road - the western wing of the Hotel cantilevers in a dynamic gesture to form the Porte Cochere.
“Architecture should say something about the beauty and uniqueness of its context, not by hiding from it apologetically, but by responding confidently to the challenge it lays down.” - Ngata Tapsell, project architect
