Bay View Road House
Situated overlooking Lake Wakatipu, this family home responds to the generous vistas of the expansive yet exposed site.
The topography of the site allows for garaging to be located at a lower level, elevating the main living areas and external terrace, providing panoramic views across the lake.
The rear bedrooms and TV lounge are arranged in a series of cedar pavilions, connected together via a full length glass corridor, enabling fleeting glimpses of the lake through the house, from the rear of the site. The narrow site was broken up by use of these pavilions, creating a series of courtyards, each with their own unique outlook and character, as well as providing flexible living and protection from wind and sun.
The house acts as permanent residence for two people who can effectively close off the rear half of the home when not used, with separate controls for heating and electrical circuits. Opening up when necessary to provide accommodation for their adult children and guests.
The materials are from a carefully selected palate. Oregon board finish concrete forms the garage plinth upon which white painted plaster walls bookend the main living structure, connected with full height glazing in black anodised frames. Elsewhere Western red cedar weatherboards, Eurotray roofing and painted concrete are used.
