Michael Mason

Principal Specialist Auckland

Michael is a Principal of the practice having returned to the practice following an eight year period working in London. His experience covers a wide range of building typologies including residential, commercial and hospitality projects and he has worked extensively with the adaptive re-use of historic buildings. Working with such a varied range of project types has led to a focus on client-centred solutions for complex briefing and design issues and an ability to work with extensive client, user and design teams.

Michael has gained valuable international experience having engaged with projects in Moscow, Doha and Algiers along with a major body of work in London. Key projects have included the fit-out of Al Jazeera’s new London premises in The Shard, the refurbishment of the Eastern Range of the award-winning King’s Cross Station in London and the new Mandarin Oriental hotel in Doha.

Michael’s approach to design has been founded on achieving a clarity of form and richness of material expression through the interrogation of a brief and site context. He is interested in the generation of spaces and a landscape that are integrated and used seamlessly.

Michael is currently leading the design and project delivery for Commercial Bay and the new mixed-use development at One Queen Street, Auckland.
