This year’s Festival of Architecture, which runs from 14 – 23 September, sees events, talks and activities designed to celebrate architecture – and its importance to the life of New Zealand’s towns and cities.

Auckland

Disrupt: Unitec Asylum 2018 Exhibition 14 September – 23 September, Warren and Mahoney Laneway, 139 Pakenham Street West Open 09:00 - 17:00 Monday - Friday; 10:00 - 16:30 Saturday - Sunday A student exhibition highlighting ways of disrupting the stream of waste from the building industry and the urgent need to disrupt single use plastic bag production. Green Building Walking Tour

We have brought together a group of talented individuals who are approaching design and architectural challenges with a fresh perspective. Join Hamish Monk and Dean Mackenzie of Monk Mackenzie, Barrington Gohns from Warren and Mahoney, and Kamelia Peneva and Hayley Wright from both Isthmus and the recently established Next Door, as they discuss and debate what the role of an architect is, how this role is changing and what it is that we actually do... or could do. Free. Future Auckland 18:00 - 19:30, Friday 21 September, Warren and Mahoney, 139 Pakenham Street West To celebrate the Festival of Architecture, we invite you to hear from the creative minds behind two of Auckland's most transformational projects; Commercial Bay and the New Zealand International Convention Centre. Architects Blair Johnston and Richard Archbold will be joined by Auckland Design Champion Ludo Campbell-Reid and Jeremy Hansen as MC, as they discuss the future of Auckland City. Free. World Park(ing) Day All day, Friday 21 September, Location TBC Celebrate World Park(ing) Day - the day when architecture and design studios all over the city (and world!) colonise carparks and show what can happen when they're occupied by people, not vehicles. Details to come.

Design Forum: Cathedral Square

6.00pm, Thursday 13 September, Christchurch Art Gallery Auditorium

Warren and Mahoney, Architectus, Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Sheppard and Rout and Woods Bagot will be describing how engagement has been addressed by their respective project designs, including activation with the Cathedral Square and the wider urban context. James Lunday will be provocateur in the debate, bringing historical reference and insight to the discussion..

'At This Stage': Grace Mortlock Talk (Other Architects) 17:30 - 18:30, 20 September, Warren and Mahoney, 254 Montreal Street (entrance on Cashel St) Hear Grace Mortlock, co-founder of Other Architects, discuss the ‘other’ approaches the practice takes that challenge conventional wisdom, popular opinion and architectural trends. Other Architects recently received the 2018 INDE ‘Prodigy’ award for most promising design practice in the Asia-Pacific region. Register here.

Our Heritage Tour Tour one: 13:00, Tour Two: 14:30 Sunday 23 September, The Arts Centre, Christchurch The Arts Centre has a rich history – one that now includes an extensive restoration following the Canterbury earthquakes.
